Practical Computer Forensics for Investigation

Computers have been integrated into almost every aspect of our daily lives. Whether we use them for work, entertainment, or communication they are unassuming witnesses that absorb user behavior. Digital artifacts retrieved from a computer system are often clean, precise and readily available. Trained investigators can leverage these artifacts to develop key sources of investigative material.

This course is not intended to replace valued investigative techniques and experience. Our goal is to supplement these with a foundation in forensic tools and methodologies. While this seminar will motivate and explore the theory behind the technology, the heart of the course is developing creative solutions which allow investigators to meet objectives simply and efficiently.

The purpose of this seminar is to provide participants with:

  • An understanding of the options available during a digital investigation.
  • The capacity to provide accurate time and resource estimates for an investigation.
  • An ability to develop reliable and veracious audit trails for electronic evidence.
  • Techniques for navigating digital media and supporting case development.
  • A directed examination of computer hardware, operating systems and file storage.
  • A walkthrough and hands-on survey of freely-available industry tools.
  • Electronic resources and software to continue learning outside of the classroom.

Practical Forensics has application at the investigative level of the organization and for supervisors in the areas of Internal Affairs, Criminal Investigations, and IT support.

Each student will need a laptop computer for use during practical exercises. The laptop will not need internet access. All software will be provided.
