Crime Scene Investigation: Beyond the Basics

This three-day Crime Scene Course was developed by a group of the foremost crime scene investigators in Colorado for law enforcement personnel whose duties include crime scene investigation. Participants will learn and practice new skills during practical exercises and will receive valuable feedback. To benefit from this class you should be proficient in basic crime scene skills such as drawing basic scene sketches, lifting fingerprints, processing evidence, and taking acceptable photographs.

What you will learn:

  • Several new ways to collect impression evidence; including different casting techniques
  • Nighttime photography & how to photograph chemically enhanced latent bloodstain evidence
  • What evidence can be derived from properly collected computers and other digital devices
  • How to capture evidence from cell phones
  • Bloodstain pattern analysis and DNA
  • How to document findings for court
Much of the instruction will be presented through case studies and hands-on stations which allow each student to work with the evidence. The first day of class begins at 1:00 pm to accommodate the night photography class. The second and third day begin at 8:00 am.

Attendance is restricted to certified officers or other employees who perform crime scene investigations and who possess basic crime scene investigation skills. The tuition fee covers dinner on the first day, handout materials, and tools for the practical exercises. Participants will be required to bring additional items, and will be advised of these items prior to the class. The Class is limited to 20 participants.
