Background Investigation Update and Software Introduction

This three-hour update was developed as a refresher course to the Background Investigation for Police Applicants Course taught by Harvey, Ward & Associates. Attendance at a prior background investigator course is not required, but helpful. This course is also helpful to the Background Investigator practitioner and departmental supervisor as a validation of an agencies current investigative methodology in the hiring of police officers. This course will review the procedures taught in the 12 hour course from the macro level while reinforcing the importance of producing a verifiable chronological history of an applicant's life. Imbedded in this course will be a discussion of Background Solutions new software investigative tool, “Background Assistant.”

Topics to be reviewed:

• Overview of the Fair Employment Laws
• Overview and Analysis of commonly required application information
• Review of other pre-employment screening devices to determine suitability for employment
• Techniques for obtaining verification of application information.
• Evaluation of the efficiency of the background investigation process in use at their agency to maximize use of resources
• Document facts and events in a similar manner for each applicant to ensure consistency and ease of retrieval.
